The Ministry of Transportation of New Zealand has confirmed that the forthcoming implementation of the ban on use of mobile phones while driving includes prohibiting the use of smart phone-based car navigation systems.

According to Dominique Post, which has quoted John Summers, spokesman of New Zealand’s Ministry of Transportation, under the new regulations, it was illegal to use smart phone’s navigation system when driving. “Amendments to the rules of road users in 2009 mean drivers can’t look at the navigation system of their mobile phones when they are driving, even if the phone is placed in the instrument panel.”

“While driving, you can use the phone put on the bracket, but only to dial, answer or hang up a call. You cannot use the phone to do any other things, such as viewing a GPS map, checking Emails, or access to electronic log. ”
