China Will Replace the U.S. to be the Largest Smart Phone Market in 2010

With the emerging markets becoming the thrust force of sales volume of smart phones, market research agency Pyramid said China would overtake the United States in 2010 to become the world’s largest sales market for smart phones.

The agency said Brazil, India, Turkey and Nigeria had become the fastest-growing markets of smart phones, and in these countries 2G was still the mainstream of telecommunications services.

Pyramid expects that the proportion of smart phones in the total mobile phone sales will grow from only 16% in 2009 to 37% in 2014; and to achieve the sharp increase of smart phone sales in the next five years, the key is that telecom service providers in emerging markets have begun to actively provide large-scale subsidies for smart phones.

Pyramid said that in 2009 the United States remained the world’s largest sales market for smart phones, but with China’s three major telecom service providers China Mobile, Unicom and Telecom started to provide since this year smart phone subsidies, it was expected that in 2010, China would replace the United States to be the largest smart phone market.

Besides China, Brazil, India, Turkey and Nigeria are the top four fastest growing smart phone markets with smart phone growth in the next five years be as high as 43%, 39%, 37% and 34%. From a regional perspective, Latin America is the fastest growing area with a five-year compound annual growth rate of up to 48%, followed by Africa and the Middle East region with an estimated 5-year compound annual growth rate of as high as 39%.

However, in these high-growth smart phone markets, 3G service is neither not ready, nor 2G services need improvement, so they are very different compared to mature markets.
