ARM Expects Explosive Growth in the Global Smart Phone Market Next Year

According to the British microchip manufacturer ARM, next year the smart phone chip market will grow at a rate faster than this year. It is reported that 90% of mobile phones have adopted chips designed by ARM, including Apple iPhone and Nokia N900 aiming at high-end markets.

Tim Score, Chief Financial Officer of ARM said the smart phone market would grow this year. We will find this market growing at a faster rate see next year. He expects the sales of smart phones within the next five years will grow from this year’s 200 million sets to 500 million sets.

Carmelo Papa, head of the industrial sector of ST Microelectronics, said, smart phone had a strong growth potential.

In addition to making phone calls, smart phones have many other functions. Smart phones generally have Web browser, integrated music players, digital cameras and video recorders and e-mail services and so on.

As Nokia and Google are promoting their operating systems to low-cost smart phone manufacturers that enjoy high sales volume, it is predicted that next year, the declined prices of smart phones will further promote the market’s development.

Geoff Blaber, analyst of CCS Insight said, as manufacturers and operators are seeking to introduce open platform to the mass market, 2010 will witness the continuous growth of the smart phone market.

The global sales of mobile phone will reach 1.1 billion by the end of this year. Nokia still ranks first. However, the market share of smart phone manufacturers like RIM and Apple are on the rise.
